How to talk to the Wish Machine?

Harnessing Quantum 2026, online invited lecture (40 min).

Abstract. Why do seemingly all-powerful wish machines so often cause trouble in fiction and myth? They misinterpret human intentions and fulfill wishes in unexpected ways. Similar failures arise in AI-driven scientific research: systems may optimize the wrong objective, exploit a benchmark, or rely on an outdated proxy. Avoiding them requires learning how to communicate with the "wish machine" in the right language. In this talk, I will share practical lessons from developing algorithms for quantum many-body systems and discuss how AI may reshape future algorithm design.
